Voice Performances and Evaluations

Folk Group Song – ‘Roll Jordan Roll’
Assessment Date: 03/10/2017
After familiarizing ourselves with the harmonises, we were then assessed on the song, which involved us getting marked on, not just our voices, i.e. tone, but also our performances, which had to include us getting into the feel of the song. I thought that all of us did a good job with the harmonies, as we had very little time to get familiar with them.
One of my strengths in this assessment was characterisation, as the genre came about during a time where enjoying life was difficult, so in order for me to portray this, I wanted to delve into a character that was having fun for the first time.  Also, memorization of the lyrics was also I think one of my strengths, as during rehearsal for this song, I kept on getting the verses and certain words mixed around, so I was happy that after the assessment, I managed to not screw up any verses or words.
Jazz Group Song – ‘Hit The Road Jack’
Assessment Date: 17/10/2017
After the assessment, I thought that I did a decent job on my vocal ability, as I often tend to go out of key quite a lot when performing a song and I also have a few pitching issues, but other than that I gave it a try and I will see what I can improve on my next voice assessment.
Jazz Solo – ‘Fever’
Assessment Date: 07/11/2017
For the assessment, some people chose different jazz songs to the ones they performed a few weeks back, but I chose to stick with ‘Fever’.

I do agree with the feedback that I was given, as I’m not the best singer in my class, and out of the three disciplines, singing is my weakness, so for me to pass this assessment was good enough for me.  I do definitely need to work on my pitch when it comes to performing solos or group songs in the future, as I’m not very good at pitch matching, so in order for me to achieve, I’ll have to listen out to my teacher and the people who I’m standing in between.
Musical Theatre Group Performance
West Side Story
Performance Date: 28/03/2018
Overall, I thought that our performance of a medley from West Side Story was the best we’ve ever performed it, as in rehearsals, some of us kept missing queues for when to go on and there were a few timing issues, but when it came to the performance, all of us took on the constructive criticism that we were given, which enhanced all of our performances.
One of my favourite numbers was ‘America’, and I felt like this was the number that I did my best performance in, as this was a song that made you feel free, in terms of the fact that you could do whatever you wanted whenever an ensemble verse came in.  The fact that we were allowed to do this, and the fact that all the girls had their skirts on, we were allowed to swish around in them a lot, whereas in the other numbers, we couldn’t use our skirts as much.  This was a number that I was very pleased to be a part of.
